Syllabus is due signed by Friday 8/25 Click here to upload it.
Art Supplies: Please have supplies by Monday 8/28/17 or Tuesday 8/29/17
9″ x 12″ (sizes may vary). Please avoid the over-sized sketchbooks/sketchpads. 11″ x 14″, 14″ x 17″, 18″ x 24″, and 24″ x 36″ create a storage and transportation problem.
Where to purchase a sketchbook: Target, Michaels, or Dollar Tree or Dollar Stores.
All students are required to purchase a sketchbook or sketchpad for art each class. Some are often hard-bound and sometimes have an elastic band to hold them closed others are spiral or tape-bound. Any of those options are acceptable. Suggestion: avoid the tape-bound sketchbooks because they then to fall apart easily.
Don't get the sketchbooks that say, watercolor or mixed media. They are heavier weight paper (98 lbs - 140 lbs) so it's less paper and more expensive. The yellow one is the kind that is tape bound at the top and falls apart easily.
Art Supplies: Please have supplies by Monday 8/28/17 or Tuesday 8/29/17
- Sketchbook or Sketchpad (I'm flexible on sizes, just make sure it fits in your backpack, and it's not super small meaning smaller notebook paper.) We will using about 40 pages. You may switch to a new sketchbook during semester 2 if needed.

Do get the sketchbook that says sketch or drawing. I recommend the spiral bound or the book bound. Several brands sell this kind of sketchbook, the paper weight is around 60 lbs. Any of them are great.

Monday 9/18 - Friday 9/22
Present Name illustrations with the class in a circle. Students must open their sketchbooks to page 8 where they taped the "Name Illustration Rubric" and give their sketchbook to the teacher so the teacher can grade their illustration while they present it to the class.

Do's and Don'ts during a Critique:
- Don't laugh during a presentation because it could cause the student to feel insecure.
- Don't make jokes while presenting, this is a professional presentation. Jokes are sometimes an inappropriate cooping mechanism for feeling nervous or uncomfortable and should be avoided.
- Don't multi-task while students are presenting.
- Don't just say you like it.
- Do provide a reason why you like it, be specific. Use the elements and principles in your explanation why you like it.
- Do make eye contact with the presenter
- Do remain silent until the presenter is finished presenting, then ask appropriate kind questions if appropriate.
- Do provide a total of 3 stars and wishes for each drawing.
- Do use academic language, meaning refer to the elements and principles posters to provide stars and wishes. For example you could say "I like how you used warm colors in your name drawing it really represents your happy friendly personality. I wish you had used more contrast in the letters so the letter stood out more from far away."
- Do provide kind and helpful feedback.

Mandala Sentance Starters
- Our mandala represents... (Summarize what the mandala represents in one or two sentences).
- Describe each symbol in detail and who it represents. For example, "I drew a star to represent my classmate, Cari's dad. He joined the army because he wanted to get out of the house. He wasn't happy at home with his parents. It was a good experience for him. The army taught him the discipline he needed to become successful in life."
- Describe how the colors are symbolic. For example, "The army green represents the army logo color. I also put blue in the background because Cari's dad is a very trustworthy person and he loves to be outdoors."
- Describe which style of mandala you choose to use, it was either (a rotational, a reflection, or a free form) mandala. Say: "I created a rotational mandala where one pie rotates around to create a full circle."
- Closure sentence: How did the mandala create empathy to create diversity within your group? You can do this by adding a personalized statement in at the end about your point of view of your classmates now that you have gotten to know them better. Tips: Think about how you felt after hearing each student's individual story. Share your reaction. Could you relate to any of the stories or did you find that everyone was very different and came from different backgrounds? Do you view your classmates any differently after getting to know them better?

Monday 11/27 - Friday 12/1
1. POL Prep
If you have an A you may create a passion project. This means you may make any art project of your choice. It must display 6 or more hours of work. I'm hoping you will try something new or take on a project you've always wanted to try. I'm grading the process and effort more so than the final project. So, explore have fun and be creative. If you find inspiration online you must change it some to make it your own. If we just copy we're not being creative and original.
You must save the presentation in your 9th Grade Art Folder in your Google Drive.
Requirements for Passion Project:
1. For the presentation you must present 3 or more steps showing how you created your original artwork. The steps must include photos of the work as you make it.
2. The title page must read your name and your art period.
3. You also must bring the original artwork in unless it is not possible to bring in then a picture will do.
4. The last slide must say "Thank you do you have any questions?"
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you have an A- or lower you must create an original drawing that communicates a message. The message can be anything you want like "No smoking" "Don't bully" "Dream Big" etc.
You must save the presentation in your 9th Grade Art Folder in your Google Drive.
Requirements for message drawing:
1. You must apply 10 values to your drawing using colors. If it needs to be black and white that is allowed as long as it has a lot of values. To get a 4 the values must help communicate your message. For example you use contrast to emphasize the focal point.
2. You must fill 90% of the page.
3. It must be done neatly
4. The presentation must include a title page with your name and art period.
5. The presentation must include a description of 3 elements or principles of art that you used to communicate your message.
For Example: "I used a really dark red and a dark smoky grey to communicate don't smoke. I used jagged lines in the background to make it look dangerous so viewers won't want to smoke. I also left a light highlight of yellow and white around the text to emphasize it and make it stand out on the dark background."
6. The last slide must say "Thank you do you have any questions?"
